Check out the latest on these six downtown Austin-area businesses.

Bacalar

“Top Chef” winner Gabe Erales, along with partners Kevin Burns, Merrill Alley and Lara Burns Boyda, all from Austin, opened a two-story Yucatán-inspired restaurant in mid-September in the Rainey Street area. Bacalar serves dishes that include pumpkin seed salsa, grilled swordfish, pork shoulder and belly, and masa dumplings. The bar features drinks composed of regional agave spirits, lima, sour orange and mamey.

Tómalo Taquería

The walk-up window is available in front of Bacalar on East 44 Avenue and opened in October. Tómalo Taquería offers food and drink options, such as breakfast and lunch tacos; agua frescas with and without alcohol; and coffee. Tómalo was started by “Top Chef” winner and Austinite Gabe Erales, along with locals Kevin Burns, Merrill Alley and Lara Burns Boyda.
